CO₂-Derived Plastics Advance Toward Automotive Commercialization
A recent report from Japanese news publication, Nikkei, highlights growing momentum in the commercialization of CO₂-derived plastics for automotive applications, including components evaluated by Volkswagen.
The article noted that Mitsubishi Corporation, working with partners including Infinium, has supplied polypropylene resin produced from synthetic raw materials derived from captured carbon dioxide to Volkswagen. Early estimates suggest that manufacturing emissions associated with these components could be reduced by approximately 75% compared to conventional materials.
The development reflects increasing interest from the automotive sector in drop-in, lower-emissions materials that can integrate into existing manufacturing processes without requiring major system changes. For Infinium, outcomes like this underscore the broader opportunity to transform captured carbon into scalable fuels and materials that serve multiple industries, from aviation and heavy transport to automotive manufacturing.
